Rochester railway station is on the Chatham Main Line in Rochester, Medway, South East England. The majority of services are provided by Southeastern, with a handful of peak services to and from Bedford operated by Thameslink. It is approximately to the north of Rochester High Street, a short distance to the east of Star Hill. It has four platforms on two islands. The line is elevated and the platforms are accessed from a tunnel via stairways and lifts. ==New station== Plans have been unveiled to move the station 500m along the line, to a new £26m station on Corporation Street. This would link the station to the large proposed Rochester Riverside housing development on the River Medway. The new station, which is expected to open in December 2015 according to billboards posted adjacent to its location, will have longer platforms to allow 12 carriage trains to stop at Rochester instead of the current maximum of 10.〔 There will be an "integrated transport hub" to connect to buses, a drop-off point (for car and taxi passengers) and a £1.8m subway between the high street, the station and the housing development. On 16 January 2014 Gallagher Ltd cast the reinforced concrete base slab for a new subway for the station. A little over a year later, on 26 January 2015, Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin was given a tour of the site, and was quoted as saying, "Rochester’s new station will be a big improvement for this historic town. It will benefit commuters and visitors thanks to longer trains and more seats for passengers." According to the billboards adjoining the station site, the 900-tonne concrete subway was to be the first part of the project to be completed; this was scheduled to take place over Easter 2015.
